Childhood eating disorders can occur in two stages, the oral or preparation phase, where food is voluntarily chewed, moistened by saliva and pushed to the throat. Then the pharyngeal (throat) and the esophageal stages enter the process.

Both behavioral and physiological issues can affect these stages, resulting in either the refusal or inability to eat foods normally.
