Request for Transfer

A request for transfer is accepted by our Center for Transport Medicine from providers. Anyone at a transferring center may call to request a transfer, but the request must be a provider's decision.

The Center for Transport Medicine will need:

  • A face sheet, or demographic sheet
  • The patient’s vital signs including temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, as well as assessment of mental status and capillary refill
  • The patient’s weight confirmed in kilograms
  • Laboratory and imaging results pending or resulted (an imaging CD is often the most efficient means to ensure images can be reviewed at Lurie Children's although we may send you an upload link during the transfer process)
  • Transfer reason

This information is critical to guide recommendation regarding the best means to transfer the patient to our center. The Center for Transport Medicine arranges transfers worldwide.

Center for Transport Medicine Qualifications

Lurie Children’s Center for Transport Medicine, a Midwest leader in neonatal and pediatric transport, offers ground and air critical care expertise 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We offer accessibility to specialists and services including our Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Lefkofsky Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and Regenstein Cardiac Critical Care Unit.

Lurie Children's is designated by the state as a Level 1 pediatric trauma center (the highest level for pediatric trauma), and the diagnostic radiology services and pathology laboratories are among the most comprehensive in the Chicago area.

Our neonatal and pediatric critical care transport team has the distinction of being the first of its kind in Illinois. Our Registered Nurses and Respiratory Therapists are dedicated to an advanced scope of practice to best care for critically ill and injured neonatal and pediatric patients. Team members have presented lectures regionally, nationally and internationally, and published articles and chapters on transport topics. Team members attend conferences to stay current in transport practices and standards and to learn from and with other transport programs. The Transport Team hosts a regional conference, Little People Big Problems, to share their expert knowledge regarding the specialized care provided in the mobile setting.

Dispatched from our main location in Chicago, our Center for Transport Medicine facilitates transfers by ground vehicle, helicopter or fixed-wing aircraft.

Patient & Family Experience

Always striving to provide the best possible experience for patients, their families and caregivers, the Center for Transport Medicine regularly surveys patients, family members and caregivers, and referring centers' providers and staff for satisfaction. Lurie Children's frequently offers expertise to referring centers seeking to learn from a patient referral.

CAMTS Accreditation

The Center for Transport Medicine received accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems (CAMTS), making Lurie Children’s the first neonatal-pediatric specialty transport team in Illinois and the region. CAMTS is an independent, non-profit agency which accredits transports teams throughout the country and the world in all modes of transport: ground, helicopter and fixed wing, including specialty care across neonatal and pediatric critical care. CAMTS standards, now in their 12th edition, rigorously demand safe and quality care across the medical transport industry.
